SECTION 3: Hazards Identification
Emergency Overview: Corrosive hydrogen chloride gas and liquids released upon contact with moisture. Corrosive, causing burns to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Harmful if swallowed. Inhalation of vapor or mists may be fatal.
Primary Routes of Exposure: Ingestion, inhalation, skin, eyes.
Eye Contact: Corrosive to eyes. Causes eye burns and corneal damage
Skin Contact: Contact with moisture of skin produces corrosive hydrogen chloride.
Inhalation: Inhalation may cause inflammation of the respiratory tract, edema and chemical pneumonitis. Inhalation may be fatal.
Ingestion: Corrosive to mouth throat and stomach. May cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, pain and stomach upset.
Acute Health Effects: Contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes causes burns. Ingestion causes burns to the gastrointestinal tract. Inhalation may be fatal due to inflammation, edema and chemical pneumonitis.
Chronic Health Effects: No information available on long-term chronic effects.
NTP: No
IARC: No
OSHA: No
SECTION 4: First Aid Measures
Eye Exposure: Immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping their eye lids open. Get immediate medical attention.
Skin Exposure: Wash the affected area with water. Remove contaminated clothes if necessary. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove the victim to fresh air. Closely monitor the victim for signs of respiratory problems, such as difficulty in breathing, coughing, wheezing, or pain. In such cases seek immediate medical assistance.
Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Keep the victim calm. Give the victim water (only if conscious). Induce vomiting only if directed by medical personnel.
SECTION 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: 85°F
Autoignition Temperature: no data
Explosion Limits: no data
Extinguishing Medium: foam, carbon dioxide, plus water fog for fume control.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Fire fighters should be equipped with a NIOSH approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
Hazardous Combustion and Decomposion Products: If involved in a fire this material may emit toxic and corrosive fumes.
Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards: Flammable. No unusual fire or explosion hazards.
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill and Leak Procedures: The material will evaporate rapidly at room temperature. Leave the area unless until the corrosive vapors have dispersed. If fitted with a self-contained breathing apparatus, spills can be absorbed into vermiculite or other suitable chemical absorbent. Sweep up the material and dispose of properly.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Handling and Storage: Handle and store the material under a dry atmosphere of nitrogen or argon. Keep in a cool well ventilated place away from sources of ignition. Periodically check bottle caps for cracks.
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection
Eye Protection: Always wear safety glasses. If pouring or transferring this substance wear a face shield for additional protection.
Skin Protection: Wear protective clothing and gloves. Consult with glove manufacturer to determine the proper type of glove.
Ventilation: Material reacts with moisture. To minimize exposure handle the material in an efficient fume hood.
Respirator: If ventilation is not available a respirator should be worn. The use of respirators requires a Respirator Protection Program to be in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Additional Protection: A rubber apron is recommended.
