Emergency Overview: Irritating to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed. May cause heritable genetic damage, harm to the unborn child, and impair fertility.
Primary Routes of Exposure: Ingestion, inhalation, skin, eyes.
Eye Contact: Causes irritation, redness and pain.
Skin Contact: Causes irritation, redness and pain. May be absorbed through the skin.
Inhalation: Toxic. Causes irritation to the respiratory tract, and in large amounts, poisoning.
Ingestion: Toxic. Ingestion of as little as 1/2 ounce may cause nitrite poisoning including intense cyanosis, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, collapse, coma, and death.
Acute Health Effects: Irritating to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed. Nitrite poisoning may cause cyanosis, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, collapse, rapid heart beat, irregular breathing, coma, convulsions, circulatory collapse and death. May cause harm to the unborn child.
Chronic Health Effects: May cause heritable genetic damage and impair fertility.

SECTION 4: First Aid Measures
Eye Exposure: Immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping their eye lids open. Get immediate medical attention.
Skin Exposure: Wash the affected area immediately with water. Remove contaminated clothing if necessary. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove the victim to fresh air. Closely monitor the victim for signs of respiratory problems, such as difficulty in breathing, coughing, wheezing, or pain. In such cases seek immediate medical assistance.
Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Keep the victim calm. Give the victim water (only if conscious). Induce vomiting only if directed by medical personnel.
SECTION 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: no data
Autoignition Temperature: no data
Explosion Limits: no data
Extinguishing Medium: carbon dioxide or dry powder
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: If this product is involved in a fire, fire fighters should be equipped with a NIOSH approved positive pressure self- contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
Hazardous Combustion and Decomposion Products: If involved in a fire, this material may emit toxic and corrosive fumes of nitrogen oxides.
Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards: Metal nitrites are oxidizers. Contact with combustible materials can lead to fires and/or explosions.
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill and Leak Procedures: Do not mix spilled powder with any combustible materials. Sweep up the solid and dilute with water.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Handling and Storage: Store in a cool, dry place in a tightly sealed container.
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection
Eye Protection: Always wear approved safety glasses when handling a chemical substance in the laboratory.
Skin Protection: Wear protective clothing and gloves. Consult with glove manufacturer to determine the proper type of glove.
Ventilation: Handle the material in an efficient fume hood.
