SECTION 3: Hazards Identification
Emergency Overview: If inhaled or swallowed may cause fluoride poisoning. Early symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, weakness. Vapor of tetrahydrofuran can cause drowsiness and unconsciousness.
Primary Routes of Exposure: Contact with skin and eyes and inhalation
Eye Contact: Causes irritation. May cause serious damage. Effects may not immediately appear.
Skin Contact: Causes defatting and irritation of the skin. Soluble fluoride may be corrosive to skin. Effects may not immediately appear.
Inhalation: Irritating and harmful by inhalation. Inhalation may cause coughing, chest pains, nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness and unconsciousness.
Ingestion: May cause salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Acute Health Effects: Fluoride may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, coma, and respiratory paralysis. THF is irritating to eyes and mucous membranes. May cause narcosis in high concentrations.
Chronic Health Effects: Prolonged exposure to soluble fluorine compounds can cause deterioration of bone and tooth structure, and kidney damage. THF may cause liver and kidney damage.
NTP: No
IARC: No
OSHA: No
SECTION 4: First Aid Measures
Eye Exposure: Immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping their eye lids open. Get immediate medical attention.
Skin Exposure: Wash the affected area with water. Remove contaminated clothes if necessary. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove the victim to fresh air. Closely monitor the victim for signs of respiratory problems, such as difficulty in breathing, coughing, wheezing, or pain. In such cases seek immediate medical assistance.
Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Keep the victim calm. Give the victim water (only if conscious). Induce vomiting only if directed by medical personnel.
SECTION 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: 1°F (THF)
Autoignition Temperature: Not determined
Explosion Limits: upper(THF) 11.8 vol%
Extinguishing Medium: Carbon dioxide or dry powder
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: If involved in a fire, fire fighters should be equipped with a NIOSH approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
Hazardous Combustion and Decomposion Products: If involved in a fire this material may emit toxic and corrosive fumes.
Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards: Flammable liquid. Formation of explosive air/ vapor mixtures is possible. May form explosive peroxides.
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill and Leak Procedures: Eliminate all ignition sources. Small spills may be adsorbed into diatomaceous earth, sand, or other suitable adsorbent, and swept up.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Handling and Storage: Store liquid in a tightly sealed container away from air and moisture. Handle in a fume hood under a dry atmosphere of air or nitrogen. Exposure to the atmosphere may degrade the product.
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection
Eye Protection: Always wear approved safety glasses when handling a chemical substance in the laboratory.
Skin Protection: Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves and protective clothing.
Ventilation: The liquid may form a vapor. If possible, handle the liquid in an efficient fume hood.
Respirator: If in form of fine dust and ventilation is not available a respirator should be worn. The use of respirators requires a Respirator Protection Program to be in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Additional Protection: No additional protection required.
