Phosphorus ligands play a vital role in modulating both reactivity and selectivity of transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric transformations. P-Chiral phosphorus ligands are structurally unique and historically important, but an underdeveloped type of phosphorus ligands that is seen increasingly in applications for catalytic reactions throughout both academic research and pharmaceutical industry.

This webinar will delve into the development of a series of P-chiral phosphorus ligands based on a benzooxaphosphole skeleton and their applications in various asymmetric transformations; particularly asymmetric hydrogenation and cross-couplings.

The introduction will cover the importance and development of P-chiral phosphorus ligands in the history of asymmetric catalysis and examine the design and structural features of chiral bisphosphorus ligands with a focus on applications of MeO-BIBOP, WingPhos, ArcPhos, BABIBOP, and MeO-POP in asymmetric hydrogenation. The webinar will then shift attention to the monophosphorus ligands and their applications in cross-couplings. It will address the structure-activity relationship in tackling issues related to steric hindrance, tolerance of heteroaryl functionalities, β-hydride elimination and 2nd transmetalation. The high effectiveness of BaryPhos, AntPhos, and BI-DIME in asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and dearomative cyclization in establishing axial chiralities and chiral quaternary carbons will be particularly discussed.

Presenter: Wenjun Tang, Ph.D., Research Professor at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry 

Wenjun Tang was born in Zhejiang Province, China. He received his B. Eng. degree in 1995 from East China University of Sciences and Technology, his M.S. in 1998 from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and his Ph.D. in 2003 from Pennsylvania State University. After two-years of postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute, he worked six years as a process chemist at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. In 2011, he took his current position as a research professor at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS. His research interests are in the areas of asymmetric catalysis, total synthesis of natural products, and development of efficient chemical processes. He was an awardee of the President’s Award for individual excellence at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals (2009), the National “Thousand Talents” Youth program (2012), the National Homogeneous Catalysis Youth Award (2015), the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2017), and the National “Ten-thousand Talents” Program (2019).
