STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Strem Chemicals Showed Students Chemistry is Fun!

STEM makes learning exciting! STEM education helps children develop interests in important subject areas - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

On Friday, April 10, 2015, Strem Chemicals attended a STEM Exposition at the Francis T. Bresnahan Elementary School in Newburyport, MA. Strem demonstrated the effects of temperature on the nature of matter and the forms it can take in the world around us. Molecular motion, its relationship to temperature, and the three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) were explained to the children. Chemists, Dave Geissler and John Pastore, demonstrated the properties of matter change with temperature by using hands-on group activities.

The first, second and third graders were amazed that a balloon filled with argon did not “pop” when placed in liquid nitrogen. Rather the balloon deflated as the gas turned into a liquid. The same balloon then inflated when removed from the liquid nitrogen, as the argon transformed back into a gas. The children were stunned! This was not the result they were expecting. The expo was a success, and we continue to receive great feedback from parents and teachers. They all say the students can’t stop talking about how much they loved the demonstration.

Strem Chemicals supports community outreach and actively promotes educational opportunities. Our company’s President, Michael Strem, Ph.D., is a founding member of the Newburyport Education and Business Coalition. Each year Strem scientists provide chemistry-oriented demonstrations to local students. Our goal is to show students that chemistry and science are exciting, in hopes they will pursue a “STEM” path in the future.
