CYPHOS® IL 109 in electrochemical applications

Stable materials for high energy applications

In a recent blog we reviewed the applications of room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride aka CYPHOS® IL 101 (CAS: 258864-54-9, Strem Catalog: 15-6382) [1, 2]. Like other quaternary phosphonium salts, CYPHOS® IL 101 is amenable to anion exchange (i.e. metathesis) producing numerous ionic liquids with different anions.

The focus of this blog is on trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide aka CYPHOS® IL 109 (CAS: 460092-03-9, Strem Catalog: 15-6370, Ionic Liquid Kit 3: CYPHOS® IL Phosphonium Salt Kit, Strem Catalog: 96-6520).

The details of the preparations of CYPHOS® IL 109 and its physical properties can be found in [3-10].

Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide-anion (often abbreviated TFSI or TFSA) imparts some important properties to the ionic liquids such as hydrophobicity, and good or very good thermal and electrochemical stabilities. Thus, ionic liquids with a TFSI anion are presently considered as a novel generation of electrolytes/electrolyte additives for both supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries.

CYPHOS® IL 109 was tested in electrolytes for supercapacitors [11-12] and as an additive for use in solid and gel polymer electrolytes [14-16].

Undoubtedly, one of the most interesting potential applications of CYPHOS® IL 109 is for generating ammonia at ambient conditions [17-19].

Beside the potential of CYPHOS® IL 109 in electrochemical applications, it is also being considered for some other important applications which will be reviewed in subsequent blogs.
