Copper-Based MOF HKUST-1

BTC linked Copper MOF with unique adsorption properties

HKUST-1 MOF (29-3050) is one of the oldest and well-studied metal organic framework (MOF) (Fig. 1). It was developed nearly 20 years ago [1] and still attracts interest from academic and industrial institutions. HKUST stands for Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

HKUST-1 is made up of Cu2+ dimers coordinated to the oxygen atoms of 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate (BTC) (08-0195). Struts between them form pore sizes with surface areas of 1634 m2/g (BET), and pore volumes of 0.5768 m3/g within the framework which can be used effectively for gas storage.

Most of the studies involving HKUST-1 material are dedicated to the CO2 capture and storage. Indeed, high CO2 capacity of 0.55 mol/kg  was found as a point of interest for flue gas application (25°C, 0.1 atm CO2 partial pressure) [2, 4]. CO2 capture performance of HKUST-1 in a sound assisted fluidized bed is reported elsewhere [3]. Pure gas adsorption data of nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane were studied at temperatures between 303 and 343 K and pressures up to 50 MPa by using gravimetric methods [4, 5]. HKUST-1 MOF is also a promising material for hydrogen storage with a storage capacity of 0.47 wt.% of H2 at 303 K and 35 bar [6], and also for NH3 adsorption [7].

We also offer other copper based MOFs: 29-3015; 29-0550; 29-0565 which are reviewed in the corresponding blog.
