BASF Blocking Group Removal Materials

Pd/Carbon Catalysts for Conditioning of Hydrogenolysis reactions

The hydrogenolysis process is an important tool in organic synthesis that is widely used in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry for removal of protecting groups [1-2]. Palladium on carbon is by far the most commonly used catalyst in this process. Strem Chemicals in the collaboration with BASF, offers a series of palladium-based catalysts called Blocking Group Removal (BGR) catalysts. BGR catalysts have been shown to out-perform classical catalysts in the selective removal of common blocking groups used in organic synthesis, and removal of protecting groups used in peptides synthesis (benzyl, FMOC, t-BOC and others).

In synthesis, the commonly practiced deprotection of benzylated alcohols and amines by precious metal catalyzed hydrogenolysis [Fig. 1], requires that the catalyst achieve complete deprotection under a limited range of available process conditions and in the presence of various protic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, acetic acid and ethyl acetate and or complex organic functionalities.

Relative to classic catalysts, the BASF BGR catalysts exhibits unprecedented high intrinsic catalytic activity, exceptional fast filtration characteristics, robust functional group tolerance, and good activity in a broad range of solvents.
