Newburyport, MA, December 19, 2012. Strem Chemicals, Inc. has been awarded two 2012 Performance Improvement Awards from the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) for its outstanding commitment to continuous improvement in environmental, health, safety and security (EH&S) practices and educational outreach.

As a member of SOCMA, Strem Chemicals, Inc. is an active participant in the ChemStewards® program, which helps companies achieve superior EH&S performance.

Out of a record number of awards applications received in 2012 and through a double-blind selection process, Strem Chemicals was one of only two facilities (the other being Baker Hughes Incorporated's Kilgore, Texas site) selected to receive top recognition the Gold Performance Improvement Award for exceeding standards set forth in the ChemStewards® program.

Administered by Technical Director Dr. Frank Wagner, Technical Data Support Specialist Sue Crooks, and Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist R.J. Wolcik, Strem's ChemStewards® program was recognized in part for routinely communicating goals with employees; establishing a safety inspection routine with internal audits to address all EH&S areas; installing an electronic compliance calendar that alerts employees about reports, due dates, and ChemStewards goals; and its ongoing participation in the Northern Essex Regional Emergency Planning Committee, for which Wolcik will serve as the Chairman beginning in January.

"We are extremely proud of the hard work our employees have put into our EH&S program. This award reflects our commitment to constant improvement for our products, our workers and our neighbors in the community," Wolcik observed.

"In today's business world, it is incumbent upon companies to be environmental stewards in order to ensure the safety and security of not only their employees, but the community in which they live. We congratulate Strem Chemicals, Inc. and its employees on this achievement, and we encourage them to continue these efforts through the ChemStewards® performance improvement program," said SOCMA President and CEO Lawrence D. Sloan.

Strem, along with BASF Corporation's Florham Park, New Jersey facility, was also honored for the second concurrent year with SOCMA's Educational Outreach Award, created in partnership with the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF). Strem was recognized for its steadfast commitment to advancing science education in the Newburyport, MA, public schools, pursuing outreach initiatives including hands-on experiments and lecture demonstrations in local K-12 classrooms, generous monetary contributions to local middle schools for the creation of a new science program, updating laboratory equipment, and the safe disposal of hazardous waste.

"Today's students are the chemists, engineers, doctors, and decision-makers of tomorrow. The growing competitiveness of today's global marketplace is cause for the American chemical industry to increase its involvement within local communities to promote science education," stated John Rice, Executive Director of CEF. "CEF and SOCMA created the Educational Outreach Award as a means to recognize those companies who are already answering the call, going above-and-beyond to volunteer their time, effort, and financial resources. It is a great privilege to be able to honor two exemplary companies in such a celebratory fashion at SOCMA's Annual Dinner."

The Gold Performance Improvement and Educational Outreach awards were presented to Strem Chemicals at SOCMA's 91st Annual Dinner on December 10 in New York City. During the ceremony, CEF also donated a $2,500 monetary gift to Nock Middle School's Science Department.
