Emergency Overview: Irritating to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. May cause harm to the unborn child and impair fertility. May cause heritable genetic damage. Danger of cumulative effects.
Primary Routes of Exposure: Inhalation and Ingestion
Eye Contact: Causes mild to severe irritation of the eyes. May deposit mercury in the lens of the eye.
Skin Contact: Causes mild to severe irritation of the skin. May be absorbed through the skin.
Inhalation: Effects include severe respiratory and gastrointestinal distress and damage the central nervous system.
Ingestion: Ingestion may lead to dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, and convulsions.
Acute Health Effects: Irritating to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. May cause harm to the unborn child. Danger of cumulative effects.
Chronic Health Effects: The chronic effects of mercury poisoning include stomatitis, tremors, psychic disturbances, and dermatitis. Other effects include loss of memory, insomnia, irritability and depression, speech and gait impairment. May cause heritable genetic damage and impair fertility.

IARC: No
OSHA: No
SECTION 4: First Aid Measures
Eye Exposure: Immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping their eye lids open. Get immediate medical attention.
Skin Exposure: Wash the affected area with water. Remove contaminated clothes if necessary. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove the victim to fresh air. Closely monitor the victim for signs of respiratory problems, such as difficulty in breathing, coughing, wheezing, or pain. In such cases seek immediate medical assistance.
Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Keep the victim calm. Give the victim water (only if conscious). Induce vomiting only if directed by medical personnel.
SECTION 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: not applicable
Autoignition Temperature: not applicable
Explosion Limits: not applicable
Extinguishing Medium: Carbon dioxide, water spray, foam, or dry powder.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: If this product is involved in a fire, fire fighters should be equipped with a NIOSH approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.
Hazardous Combustion and Decomposion Products: Mercury vapor is very toxic. Water spray or fog will cool fire and reduce evaporation rate.
Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards: Avoid breathing poisonous vapors.
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill and Leak Procedures: Spilled mercury evolves toxic vapors. Clean up with absorbent material such as sawdust or use a mercury spill kit.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Handling and Storage: Store in a tightly sealed unbreakable containers away from heat in a well ventilated area.
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection
Eye Protection: Always wear approved safety glasses when handling a chemical substance in the laboratory.
Skin Protection: Wear protective clothing and gloves.
Ventilation: Liquid metal emits toxic vapors. Handle the material in an efficient fume hood.
Respirator: If ventilation is not available a respirator should be worn. The use of respirators requires a Respirator Protection Program to be in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Additional Protection: Contaminated clothing should be managed in a way to prevent secondary exposure to toxic dust
