Emergency Overview: Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed. Causes burns to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. May causes cancer and heritable genetic damage.
Primary Routes of Exposure: Ingestion, inhalation of dust and vapor
Eye Contact: Causes burns to the eyes.
Skin Contact: Causes caustic burns to the skin.
Inhalation: Causes respiratory tract burns. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
Ingestion: Toxic. Ingestion may lead to burning sensation, dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, and convulsions.
Acute Health Effects: Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed. Causes burns to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Liquid is toxic and corrosive if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin. Induces sleepiness.
Chronic Health Effects: Potential occupational carcinogen [in animals: tumors of the lungs, liver, blood vessels & intestines] May cause cancer and heritable genetic damage.

IARC: yes
OSHA: No
SECTION 4: First Aid Measures
Eye Exposure: Immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping their eye lids open. Get immediate medical attention.
Skin Exposure: Wash the affected area with water. Remove contaminated clothes if necessary. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove the victim to fresh air. Closely monitor the victim for signs of respiratory problems, such as difficulty in breathing, coughing, wheezing, or pain. In such cases seek immediate medical assistance.
Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Keep the victim calm. Give the victim water (only if conscious). Induce vomiting only if directed by medical personnel.
SECTION 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: 34°F
Autoignition Temperature: 247°C
Explosion Limits: 2-95%
Extinguishing Medium: carbon dioxide, dry powder, or foam (Not water)
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Water spreads toxic soluble cmpd to environment. Fire fighters should be equipped with a NIOSH approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
Hazardous Combustion and Decomposion Products: If involved in a fire this material may emit irritating fumes, nitrogen oxides, and nitrogen under pressure.
Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards: Flammable liquid. May become unstable and liberate gas in closed containers over 51°C
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill and Leak Procedures: Small spills can be mixed with powdered sodium bicarbonate, lime, or calcium carbonate and swept up. Spillage in areas not adequately ventilated may require an evacuation of area. Emergency response teams will require self-contained breathing apparatus.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Handling and Storage: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, well ventilated area away from air, heat and moisture
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection
Eye Protection: Always wear approved safety glasses when handling a chemical substance in the laboratory.
Skin Protection: Wear protective clothing and gloves. Consult with glove manufacturer to determine the proper type of glove.
Ventilation: The material must be handled in an efficient fume hood.
Respirator: If ventilation is not available a respirator should be worn. The use of respirators requires a Respirator Protection Program to be in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Additional Protection: No additional protection required.
