SECTION 3: Hazards Identification
Emergency Overview: Inhalation of fine dust will cause caustic burns to respiratory system, skin and eyes. Lithium salts are toxic to the central nervous system and on repeated ingestion may damage kidneys.
Primary Routes of Exposure: Ingestion, inhalation, skin and eyes.
Eye Contact: Alkaline material causes thermal and caustic burns to the eyes.
Skin Contact: Causes caustic burns to the skin.
Inhalation: Inhalation of dust will cause burns to nose, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract.
Ingestion: Reacts violently with body fluids to produce thermal and caustic burns.
Acute Health Effects: With moisture or human contact, hydride rapidly forms caustic alkali hydroxide with evolution of heat. Severe chemical burns will result.
Chronic Health Effects: Prolonged exposure to lithium salts may cause kidney damage.
NTP: No
IARC: No
OSHA: No
SECTION 4: First Aid Measures
Eye Exposure: Immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. A victim will need assistance in keeping their eye lids open. Get immediate medical attention.
Skin Exposure: Wash the affected area immediately with water. Remove contaminated clothing if necessary. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air immediately. Keep the victim lying down and warm. Give oxygen as soon as possible. If shock occurs, respond with appropriate first aid. Transport the victim to a hospital.
Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Keep the victim calm. Give water to dilute the toxin (only if conscious). Induce vomiting only if directed by medical personnel.
SECTION 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: no data
Autoignition Temperature: none
Explosion Limits: none
Extinguishing Medium: dry powder or type D extinguishers only
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: If this product is involved in a fire, fire fighters should be equipped with a NIOSH approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
Hazardous Combustion and Decomposion Products: If involved in a fire this material may release corrosive fumes.
Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards: Highly flammable dust.
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill and Leak Procedures: Remove sources of ignition. Do not raise dust. Mix with vermiculite, sodium carbonate or other suitable dry non combustible adsorbent and sweep up. Use no water.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Handling and Storage: Handle and store the material under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen or argon. Keep away from heat.
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection
Eye Protection: Always wear approved safety glasses when handling a chemical substance in the laboratory.
Skin Protection: Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves and clothing.
Ventilation: This product should only be handled in an efficient fume hood.
Respirator: If ventilation is not available a respirator should be worn. The use of respirators requires a Respirator Protection Program to be in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Additional Protection: No additional protection required.
